Co-productions, collaborations and guest projects

Sharing and exchanging productions and projects is a common way for festivals to collaborate. One saves a lot on booking a guest performance or an exhibition from a neighbouring festival or a region, or a band on a turne. This way of planning a festival contributes to a greener festival management by reducing travel time and routes of the involved artists. It also disseminates existing productions to bigger audiences.

Another, maybe more exciting, way of collaboration is to be engaged in a new joint production. New productions are always costly, so partnerships help when we share expenses. And when we share creativity, we may produce brilliant shows! However here we also meet issues, such like: who hosts the first night of the show? what if a joint production does not fit thematically for the upcoming edition? how do we deal with site-specific productions (the issue of adaptation to other locations)?

Participants of the seminar - representatives of the festivals from Russian and Norwegian Barents region - are invited to share their experience of working with co-productions and guest shows.

The role of cultural festivals in Sápmi

Okta: Art and communities of friction in Sápmi

How is art from Sápmi featured, presented, and conceptualized at cultural festivals in Sápmi? This is one of the central questions in the research project Okta, which examines the relationship between art, community, and publics at culture festivals in Sápmi. Drawing on decolonial methodologies, our point of departure is that art can create frictions, and through that, ontological openings where Sámi knowledge, storytelling, and visualities can be articulated and negotiated in public.

At this seminar we are interested in discussing the different culture festivals experiences with programing, presenting, and engaging with art from Sápmi. Using “art” here as an umbrella term for dáidda and duodji, as well as film, performance, and dance, we are interested in reflections on what role art from Sápmi holds in the different festivals, and which audiences and publics it can be said to reach. What publics do art from Sápmi engage with and create at the festivals (including different Sámi and majoritarian publics)? Have the festivals been faced with specific challenges, problems – or possibilities – when presenting art from Sápmi? Given the well-documented history of ignorance of art from Sápmi in many majoritarian art institutions and culture festivals in the Nordic countries, what role can culture festivals have in giving space for Sámi artistic expressions?

Mathias Danbolt, Britt Kramvig and Christina Hætta will introduce the seminar and present their dialogue-based research design centered on collaboration and engagement with culture festivals in Sápmi. Following from the introduction, all participating culture festivals are asked to share experiences with and thoughts on presenting art from Sápmi (max 4 minutes), followed by a collective discussion moderated by Mathias and Britt.

Samproduksjon, gjestespill og gjenbruk av kunst

Utveksling av produksjoner og prosjekter er en av de beste måtene for festivaler å samarbeide på. Festivaler kan spare mye på å booke en gjesteperformance, en ferdig utstilling eller et turnerende band fra sine festivalnaboer i det nærliggende området. Den måten å planlegge festivalen på bidrar til grønnere festivalstyring ved å redusere reisetid og totalt antall reiser for involverte artister og kunstnere generelt sett. Det bidrar ikke minst til at betydelig flere publikummere får mulighet til å oppleve diverse festivalproduksjoner.

En annen og kanskje enda mer spennende måte å samarbeide på er samarbeid om nye felles samproduksjoner. Nye produksjoner er alltid ganske kostbare, men det hjelper på om festival har en samarbeidspartner å dele kostnader med. Ikke minst, kan man dele kreativitet for å lage de mest fantastiske showene! Til tross for mange gode fordeler med samproduksjoner kan vi oppleve flere utfordringer, for eksempel: Hvem som blir den første verten til den nye produksjonen? Hva om den nye samproduksjonen ikke passer helt til den kommende festivalens tema? Og hvordan håndterer vi site-spesifikke produksjoner (utfordring av tilpasning til andre lokasjoner)?

Seminardeltakere - representanter fra russiske og norske festivaler i Barentsregionen -inviteres til å dele sine erfaringer med samproduksjon, gjestespill og gjenbruk av kunst (festivalrunde, 5-6 min per hver festival) og forteller om vellykkede eller ikke-vellykkede samproduksjoner. Universitetslektor Kari Jæger (Institutt for reiseliv og nordlige studier, UiT) gir oss en faglig kommentar til seminarets tema. Seminardeltakere er med på felles diskusjon om aktuelle utfordringer og problemstillinger, hvor publikum inviteres til å stille sine spørsmål til festivalrepresentanter og alle involverte i samtalen.

Okta: Kunst og friksjonsfylte fellesskap i Sápmi

Okta er et dialogbasert forskningsprosjekt som skal arbeide frem ny kunnskap om

hvordan kunst inngår i og virker på festivaler. Vi arbeider med utgangspunkt i en tese om at kunst kan skape friksjon og sprekker som åpner for at samisk kunnskap og kunstneriske uttrykk kan artikuleres og forhandles i felles offentligheter. Vi er under seminaret interessert i å diskutere de erfaringer de ulike arrangører har med å gjøre festivaler til en arena for kunst? Når treffer kunstneriske uttrykk det offentlige ordskiftet – og hvordan åpner man majoritetsbefolkningen for samiske kunstneriske uttrykk? Klarer samisk kunst å skape en transnasjonal arena og hva gjør samiske kunst med publikum?

Forskere Mathias Danbolt, Britt Kramvig og Christina Hætta snakker om sine erfaringer med et dialogbasert forskningsdesign. Festivalene deler sine erfaringer med samiske produksjoner, evt. presenterer noen cases (3-4 min hver). Presentasjoner følges av moderert diskusjon ledet av Mathias og Britt.
